How to Grow Lotus from Seeds (Step by Step Guide)

How to Grow Lotus from Seeds

We can grow lotus in just 5 days! But growing lotus from seeds requires patience of up to 20 days and just by following the process we can easily grow lotus from seeds.

The lotus plant is a tropical type of plant that just loves sunlight on its leaves. Roots of lotus plants grow very fast and spread all over the area if grown in an open space, if grown in a pot they will grow in a circle pattern and will spread wildly. They generally require reporting if grown in a pot.

How to grow Lotus from seeds step by step:-

In the beginning, we have to take a fresh seed and check if it is intact i.e. no dent and no open seeds are allowed else it will not grow or if it grows then the plant from it will not be good enough, and may die because of not having good quality seed. So we have to buy new fresh and healthy seeds from the store.

Now the second step is to take a sandpaper and we have to scratch the lotus seeds from both sides from where seeds will grow the right part from where we have to scratch is the pointed and the dimple side.
Do it with a soft hand and scratch your lotus seeds Remember to protect your hand as sandpaper can peel off your skin so do this process with a parental guide.

In the below picture, you can see a white ring once you see this at this point we have to stop rubbing lotus seeds as this is enough scratch and now our lotus seeds are ready to grow in the pot. This process is done because lotus seeds generally take lots of time to grow and by scratching we reduce time i.e. only 3 days, if not scratch then lotus can take 10 to 30 days depending upon the environmental conditions.

The third step is that you will see lotus seeds growing, small sprouts will come out from small black seeds and this will make you super happy. At this stage, we have to take extra care of our lotus seeds as they are very delicate and may die because of rough handling of fungus attacks. This stage will make your lotus seeds water muddy and unclear at this stage we have to change water so that we can see lotus seeds growing. So we have to change the water every 3 days if you have grown lotus seeds in a transparent jar.

Within 2 days after changing the water, you will notice that your lotus seeds are growing very fast and may require water change even before 3 days Long strings of leaves will come at the top of your jar with a small pointed leaf nod. This indicates that you have successfully grown lotus seeds.
Keep your lotus jar in bright indirect light as lotus seeds require light to grow fast and will also open leaves this will take a minimum of 15 days if climatic conditions are good enough and the environment is warm enough, we can check lotus seedlings with our hand as now they are strong enough to handle.
The fourth step is to check whether lotus seedlings are producing roots or not if they have small roots which generally takes 20 days. After the lotus has grown enough healthy roots then they are ready to transplant in a pot that is big enough to contain soil and water and the minimum pot must be 50 ltr in size to get a good amount of flowers.
The Fifth step is to transplant the lotus plant seedlings to a bigger pot after 20 days of growing in a small jar, to prepare we have to get a big water tub as shown below in the image and it must not have a drainage hole as the lotus plant grows in water.
To prepare a pot e.g. we have a pot of a height of 10 inches then we have to fill 2 inches base with organic compost and then 3 inches of garden soil and plant our seedlings in that soil and rest of it we have to fill it with water.
After few days we will see lotus will grow and then within a year, we can have lots of flowers on our plant which will make us so happy.

Conclusion

We have to select good-quality seeds, scratch the seed to make it grow faster and then once roots come out of the seedling plant it in a big size pot with good-quality soil and wait for flowers. To learn this process in video format click the video below
